Whirling Winds Project

A study on hurricanes and weather made possible by a Hewlett Packard Technology for Teaching Grant

Sunset Elementary School was awarded the Hewlett Packard Technology for Teaching Grant in 2006 for its project titled "Whirling Winds", which was developed by a highly qualified group of Pangea Gifted Teachers to immerse students in a multidisciplinary technological journey of hurricane and weather study.

Throughout the 2006-2007 school year, students in Sunset Elementary's Pangea Gifted Program have been deeply engaged in "Whirling Winds", studying hurricanes, their predictability through the use of current technology, and their impact on nature, humans and infrastructure, with a special emphasis in South Florida and the Gulf of Mexico.  They also expanded their study to related areas of weather.

"Whirling Winds" is a student-centered project which has the goal of using technology in the classroom in a multidimensional way, allowing students to become “virtual meteorologists” in a journey of research, discovery and analysis.

This project-based learning initiative integrates science (meteorology, geology, botany, physics), math, social studies, geography and language arts, through studying a phenomenon that has a great and direct impact on our community.

HP Technology for Teaching Grant gives teachers access to a classroom without walls
Thanks to Sunset's support and parent involvement, five teachers received a Hewlett Packard Technology for Teaching Grant. Mrs. Sandoval, Mrs. Millares, Ms. Hoytink, Ms. Puig, and Mrs. Colon are engaging students using a tablet PC, LCD projector and a digital camera to research, record, analyze and document scientific conclusions, while learning through an inquiry-based math and science curriculum.
